Product Photography for Small Sellers

If you sell something online, the photo is the product. The customer cannot pick it up. A clean, consistent image set is the difference between a listing that sells and one that gets scrolled past, and it is one of the more predictable things a small business can invest in.

The three kinds of product photo

  1. 1.The clean shot: product on white or a plain background, evenly lit, every angle. This is what marketplaces require and what the catalog is built from.
  2. 2.The lifestyle shot: product in use or in context. A candle lit on a table, a shirt on a person, a tool in a hand. This is what social and the home page need.
  3. 3.The detail shot: texture, stitching, ingredients, the label. This answers the question the customer would ask if they were holding it.

A listing needs all three. A catalog needs the first one done identically for every item.

Consistency is the product

Twenty products shot on twenty days with twenty backgrounds look like a flea market. The same setup, the same lighting, the same angle and the same distance for every item is what makes a shop look like a brand. That means shooting the catalog in batches in a controlled setup, which is what the studio is for, and keeping notes so the next batch matches.

Bring every product you sell, including the ones you think are not worth shooting. The setup is the expensive part. Adding ten more items while the lights are up costs minutes.

Preparing the products

  • Clean, new, unwrinkled, with no price stickers or packaging residue.
  • Every variant: each color and size that has its own listing.
  • Props for lifestyle shots that make sense with the product, not a generic pile of greenery.
  • A list of the shots each product needs, in the order of the catalog.

Food, drink and handmade goods

Food photographs differently from a box. It has to be fresh, styled and shot within minutes. Handmade goods need the maker's hands and workspace in the lifestyle set because that is what the customer is buying. Both are common jobs for us around South Georgia, from bakeries and sauce makers to woodworkers and boutiques.

Video for products

A short clip of the product turning, being opened or being used does what a photo cannot on social. The same shoot day produces it from the same setup. Read short-form video without making yourself miserable for how to use it, and what you can actually do with your photographs for the rights side, because marketplaces and wholesalers sometimes need their own terms.

Marketplace requirements

Marketplaces publish image rules: a pure white background, the product filling most of the frame, a minimum pixel size, no text or logos on the main image, and a set number of additional images. Send us the rules for the platforms you sell on before the shoot and the files are delivered to spec. Retailers and wholesalers who carry your product will ask for the same clean set, so having it ready is what makes a wholesale conversation quick.

Local sellers and markets

Sellers who do farmers' markets, festivals and craft shows around South Georgia need the same catalog set plus one thing: a good photograph of the booth and the maker, for the event listings and the social posts that bring people to the table. A short session at the market on a good morning covers it, and the graphic design side can build the banner and the price cards to match.

One more thing: keep the setup notes. The distance, the light position, the background and the camera settings from the first batch are what make the second batch match six months later when there are new products. We keep them for every catalog client so the next session starts where the last one ended.

Frequently asked questions

How many products can be shot in a session? Depends on how many angles each needs. Send the list and we will estimate the time.

Can you shoot at my shop instead of the studio? Yes, if there is room to set up. The studio is more controlled; on location shows the workspace.

Do you do background removal? Yes. Clean-cut files for marketplaces are part of the delivery when you ask for them.

Do you need a model for clothing? Not always. Flat-lay and mannequin shots work for the catalog; a model works for the lifestyle set.
