Planning a Maternity Session

A maternity session has a window, and it is shorter than people expect. Here is how to time it, what to bring and how to make it feel like you rather than a catalog.

When

Between about 28 and 34 weeks is the usual range: far enough along that the shape is clearly there, early enough that standing and walking for an hour is comfortable. Twins and complicated pregnancies come earlier. Book the date around 20 weeks so the slot is there, and we move it if the doctor says to.

What to wear

• Something fitted that shows the shape. Loose clothing hides the point of the session.
• Solid colors, long lines, and fabric that moves. A long dress in a field at golden hour is popular for a reason.
• A second look that is more everyday: jeans and a fitted top, or a favorite shirt of the partner's.
• For partners and older children, coordinated colors, not matching. Read what to wear for a photo session.
• Comfortable shoes to walk in between spots, and the ones you want in the pictures in a bag.

Where

Open fields and tree lines around Coffee County in the evening light are the classic choice and they work. So does the family porch, the nursery in progress, or the studio if the weather or the season is against an outdoor session. Two locations is plenty. Standing for a long session is harder than it looks at eight months, so we keep it to an hour and build in rests.

Partners and siblings

A maternity session is a family session with a deadline. Partners are in most frames and we direct them, because nobody knows what to do with their hands. Older children get a short, playful part of the session early, before they lose interest, and then the last part is the parents alone.

Pairing it with newborn photos

Booking the maternity and the newborn session together means the two sets are shot with the same eye and the same tones, and they hang together on the wall. Newborn sessions happen in the first couple of weeks, and the date cannot be set until the baby arrives, so we hold a rough window and confirm when the time comes. Video

A short video from the session, a minute or so of the walk through the field, the hands on the belly, the partner's reaction, is something families increasingly ask for and it is shot on the same visit. It becomes the opening of the baby's first-year video, and it is the only moving picture of that time there will be. Prints and the nursery

Maternity photographs are among the most printed pictures we make, usually for the nursery wall, and it is worth deciding on the frame or the canvas size before the session so the composition leaves room for it. A vertical frame for the wall and a horizontal one for the mantel are easy to plan when we know. Read print your photos before you lose them for why it matters.

One practical note: eat something before the session and bring water. An hour of standing and walking at thirty weeks in South Georgia heat is real work, and the pictures are better when you are comfortable. We build rests into the session and we keep an eye on the clock so it ends on time.

Frequently asked questions

What if I do not feel like being photographed that week? Tell us. We reschedule without argument. A session you are not comfortable in produces pictures you will not use.

Do you do gender reveals? Yes, as a short session or as event coverage, with video of the moment if you want it.

Can we do it at our home? Yes. Home sessions work well, especially with the nursery.

How soon are the photos ready? Ask for the turnaround when you book. With a baby on the way, we plan for it.
