Fall Photo Season in South Georgia: What to Book and When

South Georgia does not get the fall the postcards show. What it gets is better light, cooler evenings, football, cotton and pecans, and the busiest stretch of the year for photography. If you want a session between late September and Thanksgiving, this is how to plan it.
What fall actually looks like here
The heat breaks in October, the humidity drops and the evening light goes gold earlier. The color is not in the trees so much as in the fields: cotton opening in September and October, peanuts being dug, pecan orchards with long rows of shade, and cypress turning rust along the rivers in November. Those are the backgrounds that say South Georgia, and they are only there for a few weeks.
What gets booked in fall
- Family sessions, especially for the Christmas card, which means an October session to have prints by December.
- Senior portraits for spring graduates who want the outdoor look before it gets cold.
- Football: game coverage, senior night and team portraits, every Friday for schools and booster clubs.
- Fall weddings, which are the most popular season here because of the weather.
- Church homecomings and anniversaries, which cluster in October.
- Festivals, fairs and parades across the counties.
- Business content shot ahead of the holiday season.
Golden hour moves earlier every week in the fall. A session that starts at seven in September starts at five-thirty by November. Book the date and we set the time from the sunset.
Booking realistically
Weekend evenings in October and early November go first. If a weekend is essential, book it as early as you can; if a weekday evening works, there is far more room and the light is the same. Football coverage fills Friday nights from August through the playoffs, so family sessions on a Friday are unlikely during the season. Weather
Fall is the most reliable weather of the year here, but early fall can still bring a late storm or a tropical system off the Gulf. We keep the reschedule policy simple: if the weather will not give good pictures or is not safe, we move the date. Read rain plans and rescheduling.
Locations by the season
A cotton field at the edge of Coffee County in October, a pecan orchard in the evening, a downtown street in Douglas with the light low between the buildings, the porch of the family place. Businesses and the holiday season
Fall is when a business should shoot the content it will use through the holidays: the storefront decorated, the seasonal products, the team, the gift options. Waiting until November means the photos are ready in December, which is too late for the campaign. Football season
Friday nights from late August through the playoffs are booked for game coverage, senior night and team work, and the archive from a season is what produces banners, programs, recruiting videos and next year's schedule poster.
